This past October, CancerCare held a roundtable discussion titled “Improving the Quality of Life for Lung Cancer Patients” at its national headquarters in New York City. Celebrated lung cancer advocates and key opinion leaders in lung cancer treatment held a dialogue and gave presentations reviewing the significance of patient-reported outcomes related to patients with lung cancer.

A recent survey conducted by CancerCare of more than 1,300 breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer patients diagnosed within the past five years found that the vast majority had not heard the term “clinical pathway”. Even after it was defined, fewer than half claimed to be familiar with the term.

With over 30,000 members of the cancer community in attendance, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting is one of the biggest events of the year for breakthroughs in cancer research. Our recap aims to give a quick glance at the meeting’s highlights.

The final episode of “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” discussed recent advances in cancer treatment and covered a number of concerns facing people affected by cancer today. The episode talked about two important aspects of a person’s cancer experience: finding strong emotional support networks and navigating the financial challenges surrounding a cancer diagnosis.

Part 2 of “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies” follows the intensifying search for a cure in the 1970s and ‘80s. The episode also explores the beginning of patient activism, and shows patients with cancer and their families becoming more involved in decisions about their treatment.

A new, three-part documentary, “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies” takes an interesting approach to the history of cancer. Instead of focusing only on scientific research or personal stories, the documentary shows how the two are deeply intertwined.

CVS Caremark, the nation’s second-largest drugstore chain, recently announced the decision to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in their stores by October. The company predicts this change will drastically cut sales by an estimated $2 billion annually, but will further their mission of serving as a health care-focused retailer.
