Celebrating Pride Month This June and All Year Long: Resources for the LGBTQ+ Community

Facing a cancer diagnosis is one of the most challenging experiences a person can undergo. For the LGBTQ+ community, a diagnosis, or a loved one’s diagnosis, can be further complicated by discrimination or other hurdles when trying to get medical care. These obstacles often add to the stress of coping with the illness, making it necessary to address the unique needs of this community within healthcare systems.

Many LGBTQ+ individuals might not have strong family support, which can lead to feeling alone at a time when having a support network is crucial. Legal issues, like problems with healthcare decisions or visiting rights, can also make it harder to get the care and emotional support needed. This highlights the need for healthcare providers to create welcoming spaces that respect all identities and needs.

It's important to find LGBTQ+ friendly healthcare providers who understand LGBTQ+ health needs and provide affirming healthcare. By acknowledging and addressing these systemic issues, we can work towards a more compassionate healthcare experience for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Here’s a list of other great organizations dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community:
Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA)
Human Rights Campaign and Human Rights Foundation
Lambda Legal

The Cancer Network
