Introducing CancerCare Canines

CancerCare is thrilled to announce the start of a new program, CancerCare Canines, in collaboration with New York Therapy Animals, an affiliate group of Intermountain Therapy Animals. Our first workshop on July 21 will provide an opportunity for patients, caregivers, survivors, people who have experienced the loss of a loved one and healthcare professionals to interact with an animal assisted therapy team.

Nancy George-Michalson, Program Director of New York Therapy Animals, has visited healthcare facilities, nursing homes, schools and libraries with her teammate, Callie the dog. “When we walk into a room, it changes,” she observes. “Animals can create a feeling of comfort, a way to relax. Focusing on the therapy dog also creates a way for the patient to get outside of themselves. The touching and petting is very relaxing, and brings out endorphins and good feelings.”

The workshop will take place in our New York City office from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It will be an informational workshop about the benefits of animal assisted therapy with time to meet the teams before and after.

Join us and learn firsthand how animal assisted therapy can help you reduce stress, provide a safe and relaxed environment to discuss your situation, encourage social interactions, and serve as a source of unconditional love and affection.

For those who are unable to attend but would like to help us inaugurate this new program, we invite you to share a picture of a pet who has helped you or a loved one cope with cancer. Post a picture of your pet and a short description to Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #CritterCaregivers, and we’ll add it to our album!
