The LGBT/Sexual Minority Communities Affected by Cancer—Overview, Issues and Best Practices

Goal: To provide the oncology social worker and nurse with an overview of the historical context of the LGBT identity as it contributes to the experience of the LGBT client affected by cancer; as well as a summation of research of LGBT cancer issues in reference to the minority stress model and healthcare disparity studies and a review of best practices in these areas.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Describe the historical overview of the social, political, and psychosocial context focused on LGBT communities, as well as fundamentals of theory, definitions and the meaning of identity centered around minority stress model and healthcare disparities and its impact of the LGBT community affected by cancer.
• Explain the minority stress model, healthcare disparities and stigma as it relates to the impact on gay men, lesbians and the transgender community affected by cancer and their caregivers.
• Apply clinical advice for best practices and challenging belief systems, and suggestions for connecting to and creating a safety for LGBT clients.
• Discuss resources available including those from LLS for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers
