Two of CancerCare’s most notable oncology social workers William Goeren, MSW, OSW-C, LCSW-R and Sarah Kelly, MSW, LCSW, recently contributed a chapter for Dr. Allison Applebaum’s book Cancer Caregivers.

On June 20th, CancerCare‘s Young Professionals Committee held their second annual fundraising event. The event was held at The Michael Kors Building in Soho and was attended by over 100 industry leaders under 40 years old from the greater New York City area.

On the second weekend of June, CancerCare hosted the 11th annual Healing Hearts Family Bereavement Camp, a free retreat for families and children coping with the loss of a loved one to cancer. For this year’s butterfly themed camp, 27 families spent the weekend at Memorytown USA in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania. Families came to the camp from the tri-state area, as well as Virginia, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Richard Dickens, Director of Client Advocacy at CancerCare, LCSW-R, FAOSW, was selected by the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) for the 2019 AOSW Fellows Cohort with the designation – FAOSW.

As part of LGBT Pride Month, CancerCare’s Director of Clinical Programs, William Goeren, OSW-C, LCSW-R, SEP shares his thoughts on the unique challenges LGBT caregivers face and the importance of oncology social workers for LGBT individuals affect by cancer.

CancerCare’s Carolyn Messner, DSW, OSW-C, FAPOS, FAOSW, Director of Education and Training at CancerCare, received the Association of Oncology Social Work’s (AOSW) Quality of Life in Cancer Care Award, a prestigious honor sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

I joined CancerCare last fall and immediately began working on a multi-stakeholder disaster response program for cancer patients. The first order of the day was to call individuals who had been involved in assisting patients in past disasters to learn what their organizations had done, to understand the challenges faced by cancer patients in the wake of a disaster, and to hear ideas on how we might jointly work on those challenges in the future.

To recognize National Women’s Health Week (May 12 – 18, 2019), CancerCare’s Women’s Cancers Program hosted a Women’s Meet & Greet on Wednesday, May 15 at our national office in New York City.

On May 8, 2019, 200 of CancerCare supporters gathered at the Park Savoy in Florham Park, NJ, to celebrate CancerCare’s 31st Annual Festival of Hope Gala. Health care industry leaders, philanthropists and friends of the organization raised funds to support CancerCare’s free services for anyone affected by cancer.

Since 1944, the size and scope of CancerCare has grown tremendously but it has never wavered from its mission of helping people impacted by cancer.
