ICAN (Individual Cancer Assistance Network)
In April 2004, CancerCare and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) launched a free online continuing education course called, “Understanding Cancer: the Social Worker’s Role.” To date, more than 15,000 social workers have been trained on the two-hour online course.
The curriculum for the course was developed by CancerCare staff and includes information on understanding the changing dynamics of cancer care and enhancing psychosocial skills for people with cancer and their loved ones. The course was funded by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation through its Individual Cancer Assistance Network (ICAN) program.
More information about the online social work course can be found at www.socialworkers.org.
