New York, NY, December 4, 2015 — Carolyn Messner, DSW has been elected Fellow of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS). Dr. Messner is Director of Education and Training at CancerCare, a national nonprofit that provides free, professional services for anyone affected by cancer.

For four decades, Dr. Messner has presented and published on cancer’s emotional and practical impact. She is a past President of the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW), and is a longtime instructor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. Dr. Messner is also a member of numerous prestigious professional organizations, and was in 2012 named “Oncology Social Worker of the Year” by AOSW.

Election of individuals into an APOS Fellowship begins with a confidential nomination by APOS Fellows who are well-acquainted with the candidate’s work. In sponsoring the nomination, the APOS Fellow affirms that the candidate meets the criteria of excellence and outstanding professional achievement in psychosocial oncology and has demonstrated dedication to the Society.

“Dr. Carolyn Messner has long been recognized as a leading authority on the psychosocial challenges affecting people who are coping with cancer,” says Patricia J. Goldsmith, CancerCare Chief Executive Officer. “We are thrilled that APOS has chosen to honor her for her outstanding achievements in social work and comprehensive patient care.”
