What's New

New Online Resource for Women with Advanced Breast Cancer

Advanced Breast Cancer Community.org is the first comprehensive online clearinghouse of information for women with advanced (or metastatic) breast cancer. The new website also offers patients, caregivers, families and friends a safe, privacy-protected place to connect online. CancerCare is one of a dozen supporting organizations of the site, which is funded by a grant from Bristol Myers Squibb.

CancerCare
Focus On:
What is an Oncology Social Worker?

Robin Hershkowitz, LCSW, with CancerCare client, Juliet

Helping people with cancer cope with the emotional impact of their diagnosis must be considered part of their standard care, according to a recent report from the National Academies' Institute of Medicine. At CancerCare, our staff of over 50 professional oncology social workers helps serve this need by providing free counseling services to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.

What does an oncology social worker do? In addition to the Master's level training in counseling all social workers receive, an oncology social worker has extra expertise in cancer-related issues, such as medical treatments and their side effects. They also help with the practical concerns that come with a cancer diagnosis—like communicating with your health care team, talking to your children and other loved ones about cancer, and finding additional resources.

Whether you are a person with cancer, a caregiver, loved one, or friend, CancerCare's oncology social workers can help you cope with the medical, practical, and emotional concerns related to cancer.

In Their Words:
"Why I do what I do"

"I'm very touched by each person's story, life, and strength. A smile often masks tears, but behind those tears is strength. I'm very touched and moved by people's strength. I hope that this counseling and support will be meaningful to them."

Akiko Miyake, LMSW, CancerCare oncology social worker
