Director of Individual Giving New York City
The Director of Individual Giving is responsible for expanding and marketing CancerCare's annual individual giving program. The major responsibility will be the cultivation and management of high net worth individual donors and prospects.
The Director will expand and manage the organization's individual donor base nationally with focus on targeted regions, through development of donor relations with current constituents, personal outreach to prospects and extensive research. The Director is also responsible for creating, implementing and marketing a planned giving program nationwide.
The Director will collaborate with senior management to design and implement effective strategies to increase individual giving, and be an integral part of the development team, working hands-on with program areas and special events to develop and maintain all levels of potential donors.
The Director is charged with doubling Individual Giving revenue within a period of 3 years.
Responsibilities
Individual/Major Gifts
- Design and implementation of individual donor strategies for current donors and prospects with the capacity to give $10,000 to $25,000 in current gifts for a wide range of institutional priorities;
- Meet or exceed personal and overall individual philanthropy revenue goals on an annual basis; specifically focus on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and retention of donors giving $50,000 or more annually and a personal fundraising portfolio that accounts for nearly $250,000 per year in sustainable, new, annual revenue, with appropriate increases in each subsequent year;
- Directly supervises 1-2 staff;
- As part of the development team, help shape overall fundraising policies and strategies with other senior development staff in order to continue the significant growth of revenue coming from individual leadership philanthropy;
- Work with the Board of Directors to engage current and prospective individual major donors, including correspondence and in-person meetings with a focus on individual gifts;
Planned Giving
- Oversee the development and execution of a marketing plan for the planned giving program that encompasses a variety of outreach and educational efforts;
- Identify planned gift prospects nationwide and develop a portfolio of prospects in the first 12 months from the CancerCare donor database and in conjunction with the program staff, board members, and the leadership of key committees.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred and a minimum of 8-10 years of demonstrated success as a fundraiser, with an emphasis on securing individual major donor contributions;
- A proven track record of closing annual gifts of $100,000 or more is required;
- A proven track record in implementing and managing a planned giving program, familiarity with planned giving techniques and relevant aspects of financial planning and marketing such a program to a donor base;
- A proven track record of well-honed skills in developing long-term donor cultivation and solicitation strategies;
- Success at meeting or exceeding clearly defined revenue goals;
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, including attention to detail; initiative and independence, combined with the ability to work well as part of a team;
- Ability to be both engaging and professional when making presentations at events and meetings;
- Strong knowledge of prospective researching, word processing, donor database (i.e., Raiser's Edge) and spreadsheet programs;
- Experience in managing staff;
- Travel to key markets and regions in the US. Some weekends and evenings necessary.

Women's Cancers Program Director New York City
CancerCare seeks a LCSW with 6-8 years of progressively responsible professional experience, including 2-3 years of experience in supervision in an oncologic health care/hospice, or mental health setting to fill the Women's Cancers Program Director position. Experience in a women's health-related environment a plus.
Programmatic responsibilities
- Coordination of clinical and programmatic services to women diagnosed with Breast or Gynecological Cancers across regional offices.
- In conjunction with the Development Division, research, write, develop and disseminate branded educational materials for the target population
- Interface with national organizations focused on the target population.
- Identify and meet the emotional and educational needs of women with cancer who have children under age 18 in the home.
- Develop and implement telephone and online group programs for the target population.
- Conduct educational and informational presentations to local and national audiences.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate all work activities for assigned staff, including policy interpretation, weekly clinical supervision, training, and education.
- Evaluate staff performance and productivity by monitoring client calls and evaluating client files in the client database, provide supervision needed to improve performance and ensure that staff is provided with standards and guidance for compliance with both clinical and administrative requirements.
- Provide clinical services to clients and function as part of the social service administrative team by participating in planning for goals and special projects, as well as emergency coverage for walk-ins and distressed clients. Carry the ER cell phone during weekly rotation and minimum one late night (7:00 PM) per week.
- Provide coverage for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Director.
- Maintain a small caseload if necessitated by volume.
- Monitor the clinical and administrative aspects of wig and prosthesis clinics.
- Maintain professional standards such as membership in professional social work organizations, and when possible, write, publish and deliver professional papers pertinent to the work of the agency.
Qualifications
Knowledge of medical and psychosocial aspects of chronic life threatening disease, particularly in the field of breast and gynecological cancers, is essential. The Program Director should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, teaching and work organization abilities, expertise in clinical social work practice, and the ability to relate productively to members of other health professions. The candidate should be detail-oriented with strong organizational and follow-up skills including the ability to work autonomously and adhere to deadlines and schedules.
The Program Director reports to the Program Division Director and will be responsible for the direct supervision of select New York City social service staff via call monitoring, chart review, supervisory meetings, staff meetings and other methods of oversight, evaluation and teaching. In addition, the Program Director is accountable for coordinating workshops and events to professional groups and community organizations.
This position is located in the New York City office and will entail occasional local and national travel.

Oncology Social Worker New York City
CancerCare seeks a bilingual (Spanish-English) Licensed MSW to staff its toll-free Hopeline. The Social Worker is responsible for providing counseling, information, referrals and education over the telephone to people whose lives are affected by cancer. Primary focus is to empathically address caller's immediate concerns and problems, educate them about CancerCare's free services, assess need for follow-up counseling services, and make referrals to community services as needed.
Responsibilities
- Provide immediate contact to people with cancer and their loved ones contacting CancerCare via Hopeline.
- Determine how client is coping with cancer, direct clients to CancerCare resources including telephone, and on line support groups, fact sheets, connect education workshops, and publications.
- Schedule follow-up calls to Hopeline callers as needed, based on assessment during first contact, to determine need for more intensive counseling and information services.
- Complete psycho-social assessments on all clients referred for financial assistance under the agency's various grant programs.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for processing client into Total Access database.
- Research information from various external organizations as needed to assist local and national clients.
- Attend weekly supervision and monthly team meetings.
- Demonstrate ability to collaborate with others, and develop and maintain productive professional relationships.
- Uphold the CancerCare brand, mission and philosophy in all activities and communications.
Requirements, Education and Skills
Applicant must be a Licensed Master of Social Worker who is bilingual in English/Spanish, possess excellent computer, phone and people skills, including a clear and distinct speaking voice, for provision of telephone support services. The Social Worker must be able to deal effectively over the phone and in person with patients, families, their partners, as well as professionals in providing information about the agency's services and assessing and processing requests for financial assistance and other CancerCare services.
